REACH - SKW Piesteritz Successfully Implements European Environmental Law
For years, SKW Piesteritz has been taking concrete action for environmental protection, including the implementation of the REACH Regulation on the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals.
New European Chemical Law
On 1 June, 2007, Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 came into effect within the European Union. The Regulation constitutes a complete redetermination of EU chemicals policy and is one of the strictest chemicals policies in the world.
REACH (Registration , Evaluation , Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) is based on the principal that manufacturers, importers and downstream users are responsible for the chemicals they use. Comprehensive data regarding each individual chemical is required to protect people and the environment. SKW Piesteritz is fully supportive of these goals.
The registration of chemicals will be implemented in three phases. The first phase ended in November 2010. As of 1 December 2010, producers will be required to register all annual production quantities in excess of 1,000 tonnes in order for us to continue production.
Therefore, SKW Piesteritz has electronically transmitted comprehensive data sheets for ammonia, urea, nitric acid, dinitrogen tetroxide and other substances for in-company use to the European Chemical Agency (ECHA) in Helsinki, which has been created for this registration purpose alone.
Registration Deadlines
Registration deadlines depend on amounts of manufactured or imported substances and properties.
First deadline (until the end of November 2010) for all substances in excess of 1,000 t/year
SKW Piesteritz has registered the following substances in the first phase:
- ammonia(anhydrous)
- urea
- nitric acid
Second deadline (until 1 June 2013 for all substances in excess of 100 t/year
In the second phase, SKW Piesteritz has registered dinitrogen tetroxide.
Third deadline (until 1 June 2018) for all substances under 100 t/year
